The date makes 22 without needing to be reduced.

There are roughly three of these a month at the moment, so it gets marked rather than trumpeted. Put it in a diary if you like. Do not clear your afternoon for it.

What a 22 does differently is scale. The same idea you have been carrying around for years looks, for one day, buildable rather than merely nice.

Twenty-two belongs to people who make large things out of ordinary mornings, and what they tend to have in common is a very long tolerance for the boring middle. That is the part nobody puts on the poster.

You are not behind. The clock this runs on is longer than the one on your phone.

Today's money number

There are two kinds of money and most of us only ever chase one of them.

The first is money you are present for. You turn up, you do the work, you are paid, and if you stop turning up it stops, which is how almost everybody reading this makes a living and there is nothing at all wrong with that.

The second arrives from something you built once and finished. A book, a tool, a flat, a process somebody else now runs. It pays badly for a long stretch and then pays while you are asleep.

Twenty-two is the number of the second kind, which is why a 22 can feel oddly unproductive. Nothing you do on one shows up in this month's figures. You are laying a course of bricks on something that will not be a wall until next year. Possibly not then.

The honest version: the second sort is slower and far less certain than anybody selling it will admit. It is also the only one that buys time back rather than selling it.
